Links of Interest
This is hardly complete (barely begun, at this point). If you have any URLs of interest let me know.
What follows are some links to various sites that may be of some relevance, including other software projects complementary to this or that might have some of the same functionality (in some cases better than CAVOR currently implements); sites that document certain standards or interfaces we'd like CAVOR to comply with or implement; and sites that may be relevant to certain application areas where a CAVOR-based application might be useful.
In general, SourceForge hosts many open source software projects, and new ones show up on a regular basis. Also, the Freshmeatweb site regularly announces new releases of various software projects. Both these sites are worth a look.
The following project links are in no particular order, and bear no particular relationship to CAVOR.
| ElectricArc | Despite the name, Electric Arc aims to be a general purpose graph editor for everything from abstract graphs to electronic circuits to database schemas. It's implemented in perl and Tk, still rather early in development but does run. |
| QCad Freedraft gCAD/GnomeCAD | All 2D drafting (CAD) programs for Linux. QCad is also available for Windows but, since it uses Qt, is not free on that platform. gCAD is aiming for 3D at some point. Freedraft is no longer in active development. |
| FreeGIS | Super page of links to free (open) GIS applications, libraries, tools and data. A must see page if you're interested in anything GIS (Geographic Information System) related (and this definitely includes application areas for CAVOR). | AutoTrace | AutoTrace is a program for converting bitmaps to vector graphics. |
| ArgoUML | ArgoUML is a CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) tool that supports object-oriented design with UML (Universal Modelling Language) diagrams. It's written in Java. This (CASE) is another application area for CAVOR. (Not just UML, but also other sorts of modelling for different design approaches.) |

Xfig GYVE (GNU Yellow Vector Editor) Sketch Sodipodi | These are all vector drawing programs. Xfig is one of the oldest, thus has a home-rolled look and widget set that takes a bit of getting used to. Most of the others can read (and write) .fig files. Sketch is written in Python and is quite capable. Sodipodi is targeted at GNOME, and is targeted at the Adobe Illustrator niche and uses XML and SVG. GYVE is officially defunct, but its web page has some useful links. There used to be a link here to KIllustrator, which was renamed to Kontour, part of the KDE KOffice suite. That role now seems to be taken by Karbon14, whose current status is unclear. |
| Dia | Dia is a gtk+ based diagramming tool similar to Visio. It stores its shape templates in SVG -- I'm investigating re-using some of this code for Cavor's symbol libraries. |
| Programmer's File Format Collection | Another page o'links (or rather web site o'links), this linking to documentation of various and sundry file formats, grouped by category. Useful for anyone contemplating creating an import or export data filter for CAVOR. |
| VISION* |
Neither free nor open, this is the product whose ancestor I helped design
nearly a decade ago. It's been through a few owners since then. (GeoVision,
SystemHouse (SHL), MCI, EDS, and now Autodesk. At least the latter seems
to be a reasonable fit.) BTW, I don't know if it has changed any, but in
my day the sales people didn't even want to talk to you unless you had
at least a quarter-million dollars to spend. Note the blurb "for large
enterprises" on the linked page. Update: The link no longer works. Autodesk overhauled their product line and as near as I can make out, the core of the VISION* product is now the Autodesk GIS Design Server, with other bits rolled into other products. Ah well. |
More to follow as I find them and as time permits.
